Last Updated: April 3, 2025.
In response to the U.S. imposing a 25% tariff on automobiles and parts, effective April 3, 2025, the Government of Canada announced a reciprocal 25% tariff on all vehicles imported from the United States that do not comply with CUSMA.
On April 2, 2025, the U.S. Administration announced global reciprocal tariffs for several countries, and a 10% baseline duty. While Canada did not get additional tariffs, the previously announced tariffs remain in place for Canada:
Canada announced first set of countermeasures in response to U.S. imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods, imposing counter tariffs on $30 billion in goods imported from the U.S. effective March 4, 2025.
On March 12, 2025, Canada announced 25% reciprocal tariffs on a list of steel and aluminum products worth $3 billion, in response to steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by the U.S.
All options remain on the table as the government considers additional measures, including non-tariff options, should the U.S. continue to apply unjustified tariffs on Canada.
