The new incubator will grow the local economy and build entrepreneurial talent
The City of Brampton and Ryerson University announced the official launch of the Ryerson Venture Zone in Brampton (The Zone). The Zone is an incubator dedicated to building and growing early stage, high-potential technology startups in Brampton, one of Canada’s fastest-growing cities.
“The Zone is another example of how Ryerson University continues to support innovation in local communities,” said Mohamed Lachemi, President and Vice-chancellor, Ryerson University.
“Entrepreneurs will have access to Ryerson’s robust network of researchers and staff as well as a deep connection to the well-established Zone Learning network, which is one of the most respected university-based innovation ecosystems in the world.”
The Zone Learning partnership between Ryerson University and the City of Brampton was announced in early 2020 with the goal to serve as a model economic growth engine and developer of entrepreneurial talent for emerging cities of the future.
“The Zone will be a space for entrepreneurs and innovators in the community to take their ventures to the market, accelerate their growth and success, and build the skills necessary to succeed,” said John MacRitchie, Assistant Vice-president, Zone Learning and Strategic Initiatives at Ryerson University. “Brampton is the right city and this is the right time to help advance the talent and great potential that exists here.”
“We are very excited to welcome the Ryerson Venture Zone in Brampton to our growing Innovation District in downtown Brampton,” said Patrick Brown, Mayor, City of Brampton.
“The Zone is an integral partner as we work towards building an Innovation District which supports entrepreneurs at every stage of their journey. Their presence will contribute to the social and economic vitality of our City and advance our position as a hub of innovation.”
The Zone will not only attract high potential startups to drive economic growth in the City of Brampton, but will also provide upskilling opportunities through The Zone & The Chang School for Continuing Education programming. Participants will have a chance to pivot in their careers or drive a talent pipeline for startups and corporates in the region.
Along with its official launch, The Zone has announced its first challenge and is now accepting applications to work with partners in each of Brampton’s largest business segments to address an industry challenge.
The first sector of focus will be community health and wellness. Any business that needs a patient-driven solution to tackle multi-generational challenges areas are encouraged to apply.
