November 7, 2016

As Canada’s second-fastest growing city, Brampton boasts some 250 firms operating in the human health and sciences sector. The industry in the city has grown nearly 50 per cent over the past 10 years, with 6,700 workers able to support families in what are generally very well paying jobs.

Add in another 550 companies supporting this sector, and the 5,000 individuals are working for these companies – and you can see Human Health and Sciences is becoming big business in Brampton.

This growth is not accidental.

Human health and sciences is a rapidly growing field, and new advancements are being made every day.

In Brampton, some companies are using technological, cellular and molecular processes to solve problems and develop new products for health care, for new medicines and drugs or for chemical industries. Local agricultural and food and beverage businesses are also benefitting from these innovations.

They are pushing the boundaries in health care to help people recover quickly following an illness or surgery, and get back to a normal, productive life with their families.

Others are developing medical devices that are saving lives. Medtronic’s Canadian headquarters in Brampton, employing more than 420 people, is selling, servicing and distributing devices used in cardiovascular medicine, diabetes, spinal and neurosurgery and ear, nose and throat surgery, speeding recovery times and enhancing health care service delivery.

The NeuroArm, a revolutionary robotic arm guided by images to allow for more precise surgery is helping with delicate neurosurgical procedures, and was developed by Brampton company MDA.

Canon Canada has recently opened it’s new Canadian headquarters in Brampton, where it is applying its expertise in optical technology to create digital radiography detectors with up to 11.3 million pixels — a truly digital solution for X-ray images. Canon has also developed a Digital Mydriatic Retinal Camera for colour, red-free and fluorescein angiography imaging.

This is happening today. The possibilities for tomorrow are limitless.
