Exciting things are happening in the Human Health and Sciences sector in Brampton.
“We’re seeing a real surge in development and permit applications in the Central Area,” says Paul Aldunate, Central Are Planner at the City of Brampton. “It’s a transformation of the area, around the centrepiece of Peel Memorial.”
The new Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness, a redevelopment of the former Peel Memorial Hospital, is slated to open to the public in early 2017. Redevelopment began in June 2014 with an investment of over $500 million into Brampton’s Central Area in the 350,000 sq ft. urgent care facility that is estimated to see 40,000 visitors annually.
On April 7, the William Osler Foundation launched a major public fundraising campaign – You Have the Power (youhavethepower.ca) – to raise money for the completion of Peel Memorial and needed medical equipment.
“During the construction of the Peel Hospital, the Central Area has been seeing more doctors’ offices, rehab centres, and wellness clinics begin to group together around the area,” says Paul.
The old HSBC Bank Canada at 312 Queen Street East, vacant for many years is, now occupied by Natural Touch Rehab. A full service Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Centre has relocated from Mississauga and made a significant investment into the Central Area and Brampton’s Human and Health Sciences Sector.
Pharmacies along Queen Street East are renovating storefronts and adding new signage. Kinesiology clinics are moving into vacant properties.
In 2015 an application was brought forward that proposed a seven-storey medical office building at 241 Queen Street East.
In addition to the medical offices developing around the Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness, the City of Brampton’s Central Area Office received an official application for two residential condominium buildings. One is a 23-storey building with 140 units and the second an existing five-storey building with 42 units.
There is a tentative public meeting scheduled for this development on June 6th.
