Protecting Jobs, Diversifying Trade and Building a Stronger, More Resilient Brampton Economy
Brampton businesses affected by evolving trade and tariff measures can access federal support programs, review products subject to U.S. tariffs and explore opportunities to diversify into new export markets. The City of Brampton’s Tariff Action Plan remains focused on strengthening economic resilience, supporting business expansion, and helping Brampton companies navigate changing trade conditions.
Implement City of Brampton’s Made-in-Canada procurement policies, and given the current situation, look to strengthen this approach even further — giving Canadian businesses greater opportunity to compete for municipal contracts wherever possible. The City welcomes the recent action taken by local utility companies, who have followed Brampton’s lead in pivoting to Canadian vendors, including cancelling contracts with U.S. vendors in areas like smart meters. As part of this approach, the City will review its existing contracts to identify exit or termination clauses, cancelling agreements where feasible and replacing them with Canadian alternatives for major public-sector purchases — while encouraging Peel Region and other public-sector entities to do the same, strengthening the domestic supply chains that support Canadian businesses and manufacturers.
Advocate to federal and provincial partners to leverage Canadian procurement opportunities, including defence and government vehicle fleets, to support domestic manufacturing, Canadian workers and local supply chains. With Brampton’s growing aerospace, defence and space sectors, advocate for new federal defence investments and procurement opportunities that recognize the capabilities of Brampton businesses and support continued sector growth.
Establish a dedicated concierge service through the Brampton Economic Development Office and the new Brampton Business Growth Accelerator, supported by a $2.5 million investment through the federal Regional Tariff Response Initiative. The program will help tariff-affected businesses navigate government supports, identify funding opportunities, develop new products and markets, enter emerging sectors and connect with business-support organizations and industry expertise.
Help Brampton businesses adopt advanced technologies, automation and artificial intelligence to manage rising costs, boost productivity and develop higher-value products and services. Through a $2.7 million investment under the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative, the City will partner with the BHive Innovation & Training Hub to deliver the new BNext AI Program. The program will support businesses across key sectors and supply chains in implementing practical AI solutions that strengthen productivity, innovation and Brampton’s global competitiveness.
Expand GO GLOBAL Brampton, the City’s export-diversification initiative, to connect local manufacturers and exporters with new opportunities in international and domestic markets. Building on the 310 businesses already engaged in export-readiness training, the Economic Development Office will continue helping Brampton businesses expand their reach into Europe, Asia, Mexico and markets across Canada through trade missions, delegations and targeted market opportunities. By diversifying markets and reducing reliance on any single trading partner, Brampton businesses will be better positioned to strengthen their competitiveness and succeed in the global economy.
Launch the Invest Brampton campaign in alignment with the Canada Investment Summit to position Brampton as a leading destination for companies seeking to invest, expand and create jobs in Canada. Effective September 8, 2026, the Government of Canada implemented dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs on selected U.S. goods. The counter-tariffs apply to $27.6 billion in U.S. imports and target sectors including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, plastics and electronics. Effective September 8, 2026, The Government of Canada expanded the Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI), with eligible tariff-affected businesses in southern Ontario now able to apply for up to $3 million in combined non-repayable funding, consisting of $2 million in non-repayable liquidity assistance (learn more).

As U.S. tariffs continue to disrupt cross-border trade and place pressure on Canadian businesses, the City of Brampton is introducing a new 10-Point U.S. Tariff and Economic Resilience Plan focused on protecting local jobs, diversifying trade, strengthening business competitiveness and building a more resilient economy.
On June 23, the City of Brampton welcomed a combined investment of $5.2 million from the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), to support local businesses in strengthening resilience, improving competitiveness and pursuing new opportunities for growth.
Brampton City Council unanimously approved new planning protections for the Stellantis Brampton Assembly Plant, reinforcing the City’s commitment to safeguarding automotive manufacturing and protecting high-value jobs in the community. Through this decision, the City will take steps within its authority to amend the Official Plan, Zoning By-law and other relevant policies to explicitly designate the lands at 2000 Williams Parkway for automotive assembly and related automotive manufacturing uses.
Regional Tariff Response Initiative
The Government of Canada has expanded the Regional Tariff Response Initiative (RTRI), providing additional support to help tariff-affected businesses maintain operations, protect jobs and strengthen their resilience amid ongoing trade uncertainty.
Eligible businesses can apply for up to $3 million in combined non-repayable funding, including up to $2 million in liquidity assistance, and up to $20 million in total RTRI funding when repayable support is included.
Ontario Expanding Eligibility for Tariff Support Programs
In response to the United States government’s most recent actions targeting Ontario workers and businesses, the Ontario government is expanding eligibility under the Protect Ontario Financing Program (POFP) and the Ontario Together Trade Fund (OTTF) to protect jobs in tariff-impacted sectors.
The $1 billion POFP provides immediate relief for Ontario businesses impacted by tariffs and trade disruptions by providing loans that can be used for costs such as payroll, lease payments and utilities. The $150 million OTTF provides grants or loans to small and medium-sized Ontario businesses to help them expand interprovincial trade and reshore supply chains away from the United States.

Tariff Remissions Process
Canadian companies experiencing impacts from retaliatory trade measures can apply for tariff relief through this federal process, which allows duty remissions on a case-by-case basis. Contact Finance Canada at remissions-remises@fin.gc.ca.

To address situations where goods used as inputs cannot be sourced domestically, either on a national or regional basis, or reasonably from non-U.S. sources.
To address, on a case-by-case basis, other exceptional circumstances that could have severe adverse impacts on the Canadian economy.
