Proponents Announced for University
On March 14, Deputy Premier Honourable Deb Matthews, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills Development, revealed that Ryerson University, in partnership with Sheridan College, submitted an application to establish a new facility in Brampton. The Province will work with Ryerson and its partners over the coming months to refine its proposal.
Throughout this process, all stakeholders have been clear on two things:
1. This will be a unique centre that combines education with innovation and collaboration – something beyond a traditional university campus
2. Business and industry partnerships are critical for a successful university proposal
We are continuing to meet with Brampton businesses, and as this initiative progresses, we’re seeing increased enthusiasm about the possibilities for strong business/university partnerships. And we’re reaching beyond our borders, connecting with leading technology and innovation companies and organizations to explore ideas and articulate our vision.
As more details around the Ryerson and Sheridan university plans unfold, we will be able to refine these discussions and partner on more specific plans to maximize the value of university-business-City collaboration.
Ryerson has an excellent reputation among Ontario universities for innovation in education, and a track record of developing strong, cutting edge programming supported by experiential learning and entrepreneurial development. With a student population base of more than 40,000, it is the most applied for university in Ontario. We are very pleased that Ryerson recognizes the potential to do great things in Brampton.
Additionally, Ryerson’s partnership with Sheridan College on this initiative is an excellent fit. The City already has strong relationships and partnerships with Sheridan, and it too is recognized as an innovative post-secondary institution with strong ties to business and to the community.
A university in Brampton will have significant positive social and economic impacts, contributing to our local economy, to the vibrancy of our city, and to a broader cultural base. STEAM-focused programming and strong business partnerships will help produce new waves of skilled workers, right here in Brampton, that are educated and experienced to lead in the workforce of tomorrow.
