Brampton has officially welcomed the first class of students to Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) School of Medicine, a landmark achievement that positions the city as a leading hub for health care education and innovation.

A Breakthrough in the GTA

This marks the first new medical school in the Greater Toronto Area in over a century, and the first in Canada to launch undergraduate and postgraduate medical programs simultaneously. Its opening fills a critical gap in Ontario’s health care ecosystem and signals Brampton’s growing role in medical education.

Introducing the Inaugural Cohort

Out of more than 6,400 applicants, 94 undergraduate medical learners were selected to the inaugural class. These students represent the next generation of physicians, poised to contribute to health care delivery across the region.

Honouring Brampton’s Leadership

During the opening ceremony, Mayor Patrick Brown and Brampton City Councillors were presented with the TMU Regional Health and School of Medicine Founders Award and a Certificate in Health Leadership in recognition of the City’s advocacy and dedication to bringing the medical school to Brampton.

A New Chapter in Health and Innovation

The launch of TMU’s School of Medicine is more than just the opening of a facility, it’s the beginning of a new era for Brampton and Ontario. This development will enhance health care access, spur medical research, and attract and retain talent in the region for years to come.
