On May 1st 2015, ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development celebrated the ground-breaking of its new 122,000 square foot facility; the provinces largest respite centre.
Located at the intersection of McVean Drive and Castlemore Road, in northeast Brampton, the new facility will house:A warm-water therapy poolA controlled multisensory Snoezelen room for children with autism or developmental disabilities2 fully accessible playgrounds for recreation therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapyAn adapted fitness facilityA Youth Drop-In Centre2 gyms for physiotherapy, group therapy and recreation therapy25 treatment rooms3 therapeutic playroomsA Family Resource Centre for staff and familiesAn audiology area for hearing aid fitting and dispensingA 26-bed Regional Respite Centre
The project will enable ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development to consolidate its current retrofitted office and commercial spaces into three larger sites — one in Brampton, another in Oakville and a third in Mississauga.
The facilities are designed specifically for the care of children and youth with special needs and will offer a variety of services, including: physiotherapy, occupational therapy, autism services, speech and language services, infant hearing and screening services, vision services, recreation therapy, social work services, and auditory verbal therapy and American Sign Language instruction.
The cost of design and construction for the project is $163.33 million, which will be provided by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. The Ministry is also providing funding to support the acquisition of land, project planning and overall project management.
Official construction of the Brampton facility will commenced on May 4, with the three sites set to open in spring 2017.
