MDA’s Brampton facility lands significant investment of $53.7M from Government of Canada, supports 175 jobs

With more than 350 employees at its Brampton facility, MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates (MDA), a business unit of Maxar Technologies, is a global communications and information company providing operational solutions to commercial and government organizations worldwide. MDA’s business is focused on markets and customers primarily in the Communications sector and the Surveillance and Intelligence sector. In addition, the Company conducts a significant amount of advanced technology development.At its Brampton facility, in operation since 1999, MDA Robotics & Automation engineers, designs and develops automated space and terrestrial robotics. Most notably, MDA is the creator of the CanadaArm, which has been showcased on the Canadian five-dollar bill.

In partnership with the Canadian government, MDA had an exciting announcement on December 15th. MDA has been awarded $53.7 million in federal funding to invest in robotic technology supporting future space exploration. Of the total investment, approximately $52.5 million is to be spent on the mobile servicing system, the space station’s sophisticated robotics systems, including the return from space and refurbishing of one of Canadarm2’s hands. Another $800,000 will go toward enabling autonomous control of future space hardware such as robotic arms and rovers and $450,000 used for a concept study for two rover types that would be used in lunar exploration.
